NEW State Issued Contractor Fraud Resource

Have your heard of the new "Check My Contract" program launched by the state of Florida? For those impacted by Hurricanes Helene or Milton, this program is designed to protect consumers from unscrupulous contractors looking to take advantage of the situation.

What You Need to Know:

Visit www.preparefl.com and click on Check My Contract. Policyholders/Members can simply email their contract and relevant details to checkmycontract [at] myfloridacfo [dot] com for a thorough review. The state will check for any unlawful assignment-of-benefits (AOB) clauses rendering the contract invalid. If the contract isn't legitimate, they will receive the necessary forms to cancel it.

Why It Matters:

Many contractors target homeowners after disasters, promising quick repairs but often leaving work incomplete or done poorly. AOB clauses, which were outlawed effective January 1, 2023, have historically inflated repair costs, leading to increased premiums. This program helps keep homeowners informed and prevents fraud.
